Fire safety equipment a must in high-rises

Punitive action will be taken against builders who do not provide fire safety equipment in high-rise buildings, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation chief city planner (CCP) B Purushottam Reddy said here on Saturday.

Speaking at a workshop on 'Fire Safety Issues and Possible Solutions,' organised by Institute of Town Planners India (ITPI) and Builders' Forum on the occasion of Town Planners' Day on Saturday, the CCP said flat owners have a right to demand action against builders.

Earlier, former city planner A Sri Ram Reddy said it was unfortunate that citizens who purchased flats at Rs 2-3 lakhs in apartment complexes a few years ago were now being asked to provide fire-fighting equipment of Rs 10 lakhs.

Additional director, fire services, G Pratap Reddy said buildings constructed prior to 1999 could be regularised without any structural changes.

V Ramakrishna Rao of Builders' Forum advised water
hydrants be provided on pavements, especially in densely populated areas and shopping areas.

"The fire services department should discuss with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to provide water hydrants on the roads. There were provisions of water hydrants in the core area and were removed during road widening,'' Ramakrishna Rao said. ITPI, AP regional chapter, chairman Syed Muzaffer Hussain said complexes which have been facing water problems could make arrangements for use of recycled water for emergency requirement by providing separate sumps.
