Dubai: A five-year-old Indian boy has become a millionaire overnight after winning a lottery at a national bond draw in Dubai.

Ebrahim Fahimuddin Shaikh became the second millionaire in 2011 when the February draw of National Bonds Corporation picked his name.

Ebrahim's father received the life changing call on Saturday

"At first, I thought it was a prank call so I carried along with the call, shortly after it struck me, I am truly really speaking to National Bonds CEO in person," he said.

"I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness for my son! I realised I have just become the father of a millionaire and that my continued dedication to teaching Ebrahim the importance of savings has just been rewarded," Sheikh said.

Sheikh said he opted to save for his child's future at a young age with National Bonds saving scheme.

"Thank You National Bonds. I want to buy candy and sweets with it, save like my dad and get toys and gifts for my family," said the young winner.

Washington: An amazing 3D nanostructure designed and developed by scientists may make it possible to recharge mobile phones in seconds or a laptop within minutes.

The 3D nanostructure has been designed by scientists at the University of Illinois.

The nanostructure would also charge high power lasers and defibrillators, required in surgeries, without loss of time between pulses, the journal Nature Nanotechnology reports.

Paul Braun's group at Illinois developed the nanostructure for battery cathodes that allows for dramatically faster charging and discharging without sacrificing energy storage capacity, according to a statement.

Aside from quick-charge consumer electronics, batteries that can store a lot of energy, release it fast and recharge quickly are desirable for electric vehicles, medical devices, lasers and military applications.

"This system that we have gives you capacitor-like power with battery-like energy," said Braun, professor of materials science and engineering at Illinois.

"Most capacitors store very little energy. They can release it very fast, but they can't hold much. Most batteries store a reasonably large amount of energy, but they can't provide or receive energy rapidly. This does both."

The performance of typical lithium-ion (Li-ion) or nickel metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries degrades significantly when they are rapidly charged or discharged.

Making the active material in the battery a thin film allows for very fast charging and discharging, but reduces the capacity to nearly zero because the active material lacks volume to store energy.

Braun's group wraps a thin film into 3D structure, achieving both high active volume (high capacity) and large current.

They have demonstrated battery electrodes that can charge or discharge in a few seconds, 10 to 100 times faster than equivalent bulk electrodes, yet can perform normally in existing devices.

Braun is particularly optimistic for the batteries' potential in electric vehicles, which would slash charging time from half a day to a few minutes.

Nokia launching phone charger powered by a bicycle




Nokia are releasing a new mobile phone charger that can charge up the battery in your mobile using the power generated from riding a bicycle.
The device is really aimed at developing countries where electricity is not as widely available as in developed countries but the whole idea could take off anywhere.
“Bicycles are the most widespread means of transport in many markets around the world, so this is just one more benefit to be gained from an activity people are already doing,” said Alex Lambeek, Vice President at Nokia, in a statement.
This would certainly apply to somewhere like Amsterdam where bicycles are a popular mode of transport for getting about the city.
The new Nokia bicycle charger will fit any Nokia phone that has a 2mm charger jack. The charger comes with a charger kit which includes a special holder for attaching the charger to the bicycle’s handlebars where the phone slots into, and a generator which is attached to the bike’s fork.
Electricity is generated by the movement of the wheels so as you pedal you create the power. In order to charge up a phone you would need to cycle at a speed of about 6 kilometres an hour or more and the faster you go the more your battery gets charged.
As an example, Nokia have said that cycling at a speed of 10 miles an hour for 10 minutes will give you around 28 minutes of talk time or 37 minutes of standby but obviously these times will vary depending on which battery model your phone has.
The charger is likely to cost around 15 euros, which equates to about $18.40, and will be available towards the end of the year from some retailers and online.
Finland based Nokia is currently the world’s largest mobile phone company and along with details of the bicycle powered charger they also announced details of a new phone and I like the sound of it.
With the dual-SIM Nokia C2 you will be able to use two SIM cards at the same time on the same phone. This means that you can have a separate number for each SIM card but use only one device, and you can change from using one SIM to the other without having to turn off the phone first.
That’s pretty cool don’t you think!
